1. The Trump administration is pressing to reduce the federal workforce. In Alaska, which has about 15,000 federal employees, the effects of a workforce reduction could be substantial.

2. For 25 years, volunteers in Fairbanks have organized the Farthest North Jewish Film Festival.  This year, they’ve selected six movies to show in February, with food and a musical performance adding to the events.

3. A day after the school board voted to close three elementary schools, Fairbanks North Star Borough Mayor Grier Hopkins said he hopes to head off some of the district’s budget problems.

4.  More than 100 residents of Juneau rallied in front of the Alaska State Capitol Wednesday to join a nationwide protest against President Donald Trump and his recent executive orders.

5. FBI agents in Anchorage helped in a nationwide immigration crackdown ordered by President Trump last weekend. But the Anchorage School District and other groups are pushing back.
